Description
While hiking along the Union Spring Trail, you will pass a couple of backcountry campsites, before continuing along your way to the spring. However, just after those campsites, you’ll come upon this view here. This is an old (and no longer used) impoundment, or earthen dam. It is a scene of absolute beauty and solace. While standing here, you can hear the frogs and other wildlife who make their home in this now marshy area. The first time we came across this impoundment, was with our dog, Duncan, when he was just a 6 month old puppy. He was absolutely terrified of the bull frog sounds (his first time hearing them), because he couldn’t see what was making the noise! That’s because the trail here, can sometimes get overgrown a bit with tall grass. And it’s only over the impoundment that this occurs. Once you’re past the tall grass, it’s back to a well kept forest trail that continues on to the Union Spring. If you ever have a day in the Porcupine Mountains, and can do an easy hike of 4 miles (2 miles each way), I would suggest you take the Union Spring Trail. Not only will it lead you to the second largest natural spring in Michigan, but you’ll also be able to take in this lovely scene all for yourself.
