Description

One of the easiest places to visit in the Porcupine Mountains, would have to be this lovely little spring here: Union Spring. To access this spring, you must take the Union Spring Trail, which is roughly a 4 mile round trip journey, but without any big hills or anything like that. Union Spring is the second largest natural spring in all of Michigan. Union Spring is roughly 8 feet deep, with crystal clear and almost teal in color water, and a sandy bottom. If you venture out onto the floating dock (which I recommend doing), you’ll be able to see into the water, and see the bubbles rising out of the bottom of the spring. The water itself is quite cold, all year long. Estimates suggest that the capacity of the spring is roughly 750,000 gallons of water per 24 hours. Union Spring is a quiet place, where you can spend an hour or more, without seeing another soul. Some of the wildlife that can be found here (in the early mornings or evening twilight hours), would be beaver, otter, deer, bear, wolf, and even some herons. Surrounding the Union Spring itself, is both wet-lands and old-growth forests of both hemlock and cedar.
